Concept Statement:

What began as a personal project exploring the meaning of “home” as a safe space has evolved into a workshop for foster youth in temporary placements. The accompanying workbook serves as a toolkit for foster parents and social workers, helping to break the ice and create a more welcoming and supportive environment for the children in their care.

Prototype 1: "Home" (Interactive Booklet)

Prototype 1 is an interactive booklet designed to help foster youth in temporary placements feel more at home. This prototype provides a dissection of a home and navigating through the many layers of a home such as its rooms and spaces.

Project - Day Two: Empty Home Code (5 in 5)

Project - Day Two explores the idea of an empty home, devoid of its physical structure and memories.

The coded structure uses the symbolic shape that is commonly associated with a house. It is made up of lines that take shape to form the walls, roof, and foundation of a house.

The coded structure is translated into the physicality of the booklet, where the pages are designed to resemble the different rooms and spaces of a home. The booklet is designed to be interactive, allowing the user to navigate through the different pages and explore the different layers of a home. The user can interact with the pages and discover hidden elements that represent the memories and emotions associated with a home.

Prototype 2: "Home" (Accordion Booklet Update)

Since my last update on my prototypes, I have been exploring different ways to make the booklet more interactive and engaging for the audience I am designing for. I have been considering materials and formats that are more tactile and visually appealing. I have also spent time online and at museum stores researching a range of children’s books, analyzing how they use different materials and formats to create a more engaging experience for the reader. Something I have noticed is that the books use vibrant colors, textures, and interactive elements such as cut-out pages, pop-ups, pull-tabs, and openings within the pages to create an immersive experience for the reader and children.

This week, I have been developing the content that will go into the booklet. Throughout the process, I have been keeping my audience in mind, considering what would be most engaging and enjoyable for them—such as incorporating colorful illustrations. In its current state, the content is structured around a series of spaces for youth to engage with, including a bedroom, living room, and kitchen. Each space will feature different interactive elements that encourage them to explore and express their feelings about home.

Prototype 3: "Home Sweet Home" (Accordion Booklet Update)

In the progression of the booklet, I have been refining the illustrations and forming the digital layout of the booklet. The next step is to print the booklet and put it together in its physical form.

Prototype 3: "Home Sweet Home" (Accordion Booklet Update)

In developing the booklet, I have been reflecting on its purpose and how to design it in a way that is accessible to both caregivers and children. I adjusted the layout and dimensions to make it more compact and portable, allowing it to move easily from home to home. I also revised the size so it fits on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper, making it easier to print and share digitally.

While the booklet is intended to exist as a printed object, I have also been considering how a digital format could expand accessibility for a wider audience. A digital version could also give users creative control over the content, allowing them to add pages and adapt the booklet into their own evolving version.
